J. Block By Joe Blenkle/Sierra Ski News Editor
As Sacramento-area
theatre fans know, Stephanie J. Block has
graced the stage of Sacramento’s Music Circus on a number of occasions.
Her most recent appearance under the tent was in “Bye, Bye Birdie” last
summer.
Block is also an avid skier and she finds the majestic views she sees while skiing one of the most captivating experiences in life. When she started skiing in high school, however, her and her friends (like most teenage girls) had other things on their minds - unfortunately, things don’t always turn out the way you’d like! “I was a senior in high school and one of my best friend’s sister’s family owned a cabin in Mammoth. She and I thought we were the coolest and cutest things in the world until we actually got on our skis...or worse yet, walking around the lodge in our boots. Talk about coordination! “I remember she and I were getting the ‘eye’ from a group of college guys... ‘older men’...so we decided to get up and pretend like we had to go to the restroom just so we could pass them and get a closer look. “Well, there was a step...a step I completely missed - and I fell flat on my face. Needless to say, I was a laughing stock and there was no date with the college ‘men.’” Now that Stephanie’s wild and “reckless” high school days are behind her - she takes a completely different view on skiing. “I love the majestic views. God knew what He was doing when He created a winter sky with just a touch of sun, powdered snow and friendly, outgoing people to enjoy it all.” Stephanie has had the opportunity to ski in a number of places, including Mammoth, Big Bear, Tahoe and Park City, Utah, but she emphasizes, “I love Park City!” She’s learned a lot about skiing since high school. “I get cold, very...VERY cold. So when I’m skiing, I look like I’m about 30 pounds heavier because of all the layers I’ve got on. “I’ve learned it’s much more enjoyable to be cozy than cute...a lesson I learned on the ski trip my senior year!” Block has a number of projects lined up over the coming months and will hopefully find time to return to Music Circus next summer. In the fall of 2000, she is slated to star as Aphrodite in the Broadway production of “Pygmalion.” For the latest on Stephanie J.
